Many heads have raved about 6/29/76 the show of all shows bicentennial, the annual best show of ‘76. I’m not one to offer a best of anything, I know the Dead always have strived to put forth the most mind blueing sounds ever and this offering is up there with anything I’ve ever heard. Everything is spot on.
The 1/2 Step opener is like Jerry entering the scene cracking a nice crisp clear can of awesome, saying something like “now here’s the deal, yeah, this is how this thing is going down” (or something like that).
Cassidy is without flaw and deep. Some ethereal melodies conjured up during the 2nd solo of Pinocchio (I mean Peggy-O) pure bliss.
That Let It Grow comes together in crazy modally modes like few others. Both drummers in this show are tight and laying down the bedrock and foundation for the band. IMHO this is the tightest & tribally blood-brotherly-powered-like I’ve heard the drummers together since Mickey re-joined the band in late ‘74. When the drummers are on the rest of the band seems to always be on board as well and things just get elevated from there.
Crazy fingers is very aquatic and calming the 2nd solo Jerry takes is truly magnificent & the last 5 minutes or so the jam, Jerry just hits that note that sends it & they continue to mine what used to be the Spanish Jam. I love their musical flashback ripping.
Might as Well moves & Grooves. I love the 2nd set opener of It must’ve been the Roses. I could almost feel as if when Bobby is singin and playing Samson & Delilah he might be thinking “I wonder how many people here have actually heard or even know that this tune was written and originally sung by the Reverend Gary Davis. Either way it continues a trend of ever more powerful versions and the re-emergence of the Bobby growl.
That leads us to a version High Time that is probably the most heart rending authentic post-hiatus version I’ve heard. Jerry is totally taking the reins of the band as he should.
St. Stephen’s opening notes tantalize the mind as if saying “That’s right, I’m baaack & in an extraordinarily cool and awesome manner, we’re gonna tear this one up”. Into Not Fade Away over to Sugar Mag (short & sweet) into a sweet fluid liquid-like Stella. Jerry’s singing is heaven here. Sunshine Daydream winds it out and is super cool with Bobby & Donna harmonizing melodically sweet.
Now The Dancing In The Street encore is as funky as you’d expect, so cool. Midway through this version, I can’t help chuckling to myself that this is an example of both why you’d want to do this as an encore as well as why you wouldn’t want to do this as an encore. Now I understand that any time they do Dancin’ is a fantastic time. However, What I mean is that they’ve been playing up to this point for over 2 & 1/2 hrs and now they’re locked in for a 15+ minute syrupy sweet jam phenomenally out of this world completely amazing.
That’s one of the billions of extraordinary facets of this great gathering of musicians that called themselves the GRATEFUL DEAD.
Outstanding show unbelievably spot-on performances. They are all solid this evening. This is up there with other “it doesn’t get much better than this”-like shows one will ever find.
This is required learning/listening for every head on earth. So good I’m listening a 2nd time, way into the early Sunday morning dawn. Happy ears makes happy heads makes for groovy listening. Peace on everyone, everywhere!

she loves you Big River more than me..
1st 1/2 step since 74. A rousing Big River.
Peggy 'o' can really hear Jerry's string bending.
Not sure I could dream up a better start to this show.
Crazy Fingers- lovely wherever, whenever played
This is a fully formed well jammed out version.
Sweet into Let it Grow! ( drums and jam very spacey)
rare 1st set drums inside Let It Grow. (MIGHTY SWELL).
Some sound issues during MUSIC (Good pick to open)
The Music Never Stopped, It Must Have Been The Roses, Samson & Delilah, High Time, Saint Stephen-> Not Fade Away-> Saint Stephen-> Sugar Magnolia-> Stella Blue-> Sunshine Daydream, E: Dancin' In The Streets--Now there's an encore!
I find the sound quality better overall for this night
but enjoyed 1st show more overall
especially with that big soundcheck!

tape hiss is good for you
like swimming in the bay, tape hiss is good for you
of course , you ought not swallow the bay water nor the tape hiss, listen past it to the music
my recently deceased audio guru agreed with my statement that tape hiss IS your sound, it's what you want ,
i can think of other things that a little bit of tend to go a long way
ah, whereas, i'm told by pros who know,
when you're listening to digital (no tape hiss) it's harder on the ears...

wherever he goes...
The St. Stephen is really nice--slow, steady, thumping groove. Overall, the sound is a little hissy for a soundboard, but better than the other two copies. Good show.

i'm partial to this one, my first taste of live- bootlegs, and it's magical to hear it cleaned up, but nevertheless, gee, this sure is one hell of a great show, Jerry spot on,
bob and donna sounding so tight together, I really think this is one of those real highlights for its' freshness and the intercommunication action of it all
